Waunita "Nita" Whitlock, 72 of Sunnyvale, California passed away Saturday, March 25, 2017 at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center, Santa Clara, California with friends by her side. She was born May 18, 1944 in Washington, DC. She was the only adopted child of Vernon and Dorthea Sargent.
As a child she moved to Los Angeles, California and later relocated to San Jose, California with her parents. She was employed by and retired from Lockheed Martin, Sunnyvale, California after 35+ years. She received her AA Degree from De Anza College while employed.
Nita was married to Ronny L. Whitlock for 25 years; he predeceased her on February 27, 2015 and who was the love of her life. She was not blessed with children but "adopted" Cheryl Hagen, her longtime friend, her daughter Brynn and Granddaughter Reese Duranso as her family.
Nita had a giving heart and one of gold! Because she never had children, she would always do little things for the children of friends. She also would raise money for causes for children. She raised money to help a church in Appalachia, buy socks and underwear and clothing for the growing children there. She donated to St. Jude's Hospital and the Shriner's Children's Hospital. Disney's Cinderella story was her favorite from childhood and enjoyed happy endings of being a princess! Her favorite color, of course, was Cinderella blue.
In her retirement years she became blind and bed bound and could not enjoy being outside. So her friends would come by to visit. There were her friends that would bring lunch and a monthly lunch bunch that she looked forward to. She also enjoyed daily phone conversations with her friends that were local and friends who lived in other states , including Hawaii. She would get excited when any of her friends children had a happy event and she would share that with her other friends. She really loved sharing the happy things.
Nita had been a great cook and when she lost her sight she could tell you how to cook something perfectly, even remembering all the measurements. She had an incredible memory and would remember dates long past and remember things most of us forget. She was one of those with a sharp memory.
In her daily pastimes she enjoyed listening to books on tape, which she was a voracious reader. She liked to listen to her gospel and country western music.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the children's charity of your choice in remembrance of Nita.
Graveside Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 5, 2017 at King City District Cemetery, 1010 Broadway, King City, California.
