Obituary

Long-time Greenfield resident, Russell E. Allred, passed away peacefully of natural causes on the morning of October 20, 2013. He had been lovingly cared for by his family and the doctors, nurses and staff at Eden Valley Care Center in Soledad for the past five years. Russ was 91 years old.

Russ was born in the town of Allfriend, Arkansas on April 15, 1922. He was the second child of Eugene and Elsie Allred. He attended high school at The School of the Ozarks in southern Missouri. At the outbreak of World War II, Russ enlisted in the Navy in 1942, where he worked as an Aviation Machinist's Mate, Second Class. He was originally stationed in Corpus Christi, Texas, and then transferred to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, to help prepare for the invasion of Japan. He was discharged from the Navy in 1945, at the end of the war.

After returning home from the war, he married Elveda Hopper of Harrison, Arkansas, moved to Greenfield, California, and had his first son, Jack. Russ met his second wife, Delpha, in Greenfield, and they married on May 18, 1958. He welcomed her son, Dale Grogan, into their family. Delpha and Russ added two more sons to the family, Deron and Jerry.

After working several years at a service station, he and his wife Delpha purchased the Chevron Gas Station and ran a successful business for 39 years. Russ served as a volunteer fireman, and was a long time member of the American Legion Post 635, the Greenfield Lions Club, and the First Southern Baptist Church of Greenfield.

In 2011, he was preceded in death by Delpha, his wife of 53 years. He is survived by his four sons: Jack Allred (Wanda), Dale Grogan (Brenda), Deron Allred (Dana) and Jerry Allred (Debbie), his 8 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by three brothers and one sister.
He will be remembered for his huge vegetable gardens, his passion for raising all sorts of birds, and his love for his family.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to the College of the Ozarks, P. O. Box 17, Point Lookout, MO 65726. (www.cofo.edu)
