Ruby Mygrathern Duke, 90 of King City passed away on Saturday, August 1, 2015 at Mee Memorial Hospital. She was born, Ruby Mygrathern Mooneyham on October 1, 1924 in Monette, Arkansas to Oscar Mooneyham and Jennie Clara Barlow. She was the second youngest and last surviving of eleven siblings.
As a teenager; Ruby moved to St. Luis, Missouri with her sisters and niece. Together, they worked in the factories during WWII. A few years later they all moved west to California where her niece, Kay Roberts, introduced her to a young soldier by the name of Lee Duke. Ruby and Lee dated and eventually fell in love and were married July 25, 1946. Together they had two children, Dennis and Darlene.
When Ruby's children got a little older, Ruby went to work at Paso Robles Inn until they moved to San Ardo. There she worked in the Post Office from 1958 to 1965. Ruby and Lee soon started their own farming and trucking business, "Lee W. Duke Trucking". Their business continued as they moved to Greenfield where they also opened "Duke's Café" on El Camino Real in Greenfield. The businesses continued until Lee's passing in 1972. Ruby was also interested in cosmetology. She became a licensed cosmetologist in 1974 and opened Ruby's Beauty Salon until 1976. She then moved to the Central Valley. She became a Cosmetology Instructor and taught at Frederico's Beauty College for several years until her retirement.
Ruby purchased 40 acres in the foothills of the Sierras near Shaver Lake. There, she enjoyed her retirement and time spent with her family. She especially enjoyed the time she spent with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. The family spent many winter holidays there enjoying the snow. She loved to play "Jump Board" and jumping from the tire swing with the children. Laughter came easy at grandma's house. Genealogy was very important to her as well. She wanted to make sure her family knew their family history and where they came from.
In 1994 Ruby moved to King City to be closer to her family in her older years. She had been a resident of the Leo Meyers Senior Residential Facility until moving into long term care.
Ruby volunteered as a Pink Lady at Mee Memorial Hospital and also volunteered at the Leo Meyer Center as well. She loved getting together with family as often as she could. She enjoyed arts & crafts, sewing, quilting and her bible study. She loved to make her grandchildren's costumes.
Ruby is survived by her children, Dennis Duke and Darlene Acosta; six (6) grandchildren; ten (10) great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Her loving spirit will be missed, but her memory will live on in the faces and smiles of her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
