Obituary
Robert Hill Leighton passed away peacefully on January 4th 2012 surrounded by his family after a brief illness at his residence at Villa Serra Retirement home.
Bob was born on July 28, 1927 in Holden, Massachusetts to John Griffin Leighton and Hazel Anna Hill Leighton. Bob's family relocated to Southern California after his father's death. He graduated from Hoover High School in Glendale, Ca. and enlisted in the United States Navy. He was honorably discharged in 1946, and then entered college at University of California, Davis. He graduated from U.C. Davis in 1950 with a degree in Plant Science, and he and his wife, Frances Joan Cook headed back to Southern California.
His first business venture was a Union 76 service station which he and a friend bought. He then worked for Ferry Morse Seed Company and moved to Salinas in 1955.
Bob was a pioneer in the Seed Business, starting Leighton Seed Company in 1961 and was one of the first seed distributors in the Salinas Valley. He retired from Leighton Seed in 1992. He stayed involved in the seed industry, helping with a melon and carrot breeding operation. Retirement just wasn't his cup of tea.
Bob is survived by his children, Robin (Paul) Slocum of King City, Sheri Leighton (Joe) of New Mexico, Bob II (Janet) of Salinas, his grandchildren, Shelley Holaday-Moss, Brian (Kate) Holaday, Andie Houge, Joe (Crystal) Escobar, Nicholas, Matt and Bruce Leighton, his great-grand children, Lacey Moss, Jordan Moss, Miles Holaday and Mason Holaday. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Leona Leighton and nieces and nephews.
