Richard Smith passed away at the age of 86 on October 27, 2025. Richard was born on December 4, 1938, in King City, California, where he lived with his parents Roy and Kathryn (Katie) Smith; sister, Barbara Smith, and brother, Raymond Smith. He graduated from King City High School in 1956 and attended San Jose State where he played on the golf team.
He met the dream of his life, Patricia (Pat) Gaisford, on his first job at the Bank of America in King City. They fell in love and were married shortly after, on May 18, 1963. He served our country in the U.S. Army Reserve and then they moved to Monterey and had two children together, David and Elizabeth (Liz) Smith.
Following bank transfers with Great Western Savings Bank, they made homes in Monterey, Salinas, Novato, and Santa Cruz. Richard was active in community groups and events during his years with the Bank. After retirement they headed back to King City. They lived between King City and Avila Beach until they permanently moved to Avila.
He was an accomplished golfer and is a hall of fame member of the King City Golf Club. Richard was involved in the King City, Cypress Ridge, Indian Valley, and Avila golf courses. He loved his weekend golf tournaments and get togethers. He and Pat also enjoyed many trips to Lake Tahoe, Hawaii, Mexico and Palm Desert. He also relished gardening, traveling, and watching football and golf on television. Celebrating with friends, they enjoyed good food, drinks and music. He was known for providing his expertise and sharing his opinion on everything under the sun.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents Roy and Kathryn Smith and his wife Pat Smith. He is survived by his son David Smith of Oakland and daughter Elizabeth Becker (Rick) of Rocklin; sister Barbara (Smith) Pyper of Pasadena and brother Raymond (Penny) of Temecula; grandchildren Katie Becker Monroe (Zach), Emily Becker, Jessica Becker and Benny Smith.
Richard was a loving son, father, husband, brother, uncle, grandfather and friend to all. He will be interred with his beloved wife at the King City Cemetery.
A Graveside Service with military honors will be held, July 11, 2026 in the King City District Cemetery. A Celebration of Life for both Richard and Pat Smith will follow at Lynn and Mikel Ann Miller’s residence.
