Onal D. Gurley, 96 of Greenfield passed away Saturday, October 4, 2014 in Salinas.
Onal was born May 26, 1918 in George, Arkansas. He married Drucilla Lily McCoulough. Their family traveled west moving with the agricultural seasons picking and harvesting the seasonal crops. They eventually ending up in California in 1944. They lived a brief time in King City and finally settled in Greenfield.
Onal and his brother Leonard ran the Shell Oil Gas Station in Greenfield. Onal left the gas station business and went to work for Ken Funk and the Ford Garage. He then went into the Poultry and eventually the egg business. He and his family owned and operated the Gurley Egg Ranch for 40+ years. Onal never could take a vacation as the egg ranch required working it seven days a week. The family recalls even on Sundays, they would work the ranch in the morning, go to church and return to work. He finally retired and turned over the egg ranch to his son Danny who ran it for several years.
Onal and Dru thoroughly enjoyed retirement. He finally got to take a day off. They enjoyed traveling. At age 85 Onal purchased a brand new Mercury Grand Marquix which he proceeded to drive in excess of 100,000 miles on those long awaited vacations. Drucilla passed away in 1989.
Onal loved to be with family and friends. He married Pauline Whitlock and they were married for 17 years before her passing. Onal will be remembered as an honest person who always spoke the truth. You always knew where you stood with him. He was never disrespectful to anyone. He always believed there was good in everyone.
Onal is survived by his daughter, Betty Jo Anderson and her husband Ed; sons, Darrel Gurley and his wife Shirley, Devo Gurley, Danny Gurley and his wife Sarah; grandchildren, Jason, Darren, Holly, Michelle, Devo Jr., Christina, Dustin, Derrick, and Jennifer; twenty-two great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren.
He also preceded in death by his grandson Aaron; his brothers, Truman Gurley, Floyd Gurley and Leonard Gurley.
A Graveside Service is scheduled for 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 8, 2014 at Oak Park Cemetery in Greenfield. A gathering will follow at the First Southern Baptist Church, 344 Sixth St. in Greenfield. Those wishing to, may make a donation to the charity of your choice in remembrance of Onal.
