IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Nathan Miles
Holaday
December 17, 1949 – February 19, 2023
Nathan Miles Holaday was born on December 17, 1949 to Miles and Marie Holaday, in Salinas, CA. The oldest of five children, Nate attended Sacred Heart School and graduated from Palma High School in 1968 where he excelled in basketball and was part of their championship team that year. He attended Hartnell College for two years, and went on to graduate from Cal Poly in 1973 with a degree in Crop Science.
Nate has been an integral part of the Salinas Valley Ag Community since high school, where he got his start working for his father at Arrow Lettuce Company. He began work at Union Sugar after graduating college, under the guidance of his mentor, Elmer Bonetti. He moved on to work for Dennis Frudden at Frudden Produce before launching his 42 year career in the seed industry. He joined Leighton Seed Company in 1980, followed by Santa Maria Seeds in 1989. In 2006, Nate took great pride in joining Holaday Seed Company and having the opportunity to work alongside his son, Brian.
Nate loved everything about the Salinas Valley, especially King City. His kindness and generosity has been sewn into the fabric of the community, where his presence impacted the lives of many and his involvement knew no bounds: He was a charter member of the King City Young Farmers, a member of The Knights of Columbus, the KCHS Mustang Bench, the Hartnell College Foundation, the Mission San Antonio Restoration Committee, as well as serving on the King City Volunteer Fire Department. He spent many years on the Salinas Valley Fair Board, several of which where he acted as Director of the Junior Livestock Auction and poured his heart into supporting the local 4-H and FFA kids. He will be forever remembered as "Longbelly," and "Big Nate" by the many friends he has made throughout his lifetime.
Nate's love of the San Francisco Giants was always a family affair, and he looked forward to attending the home opener with his friends every year. He loved gathering with his family and friends to enjoy Giants games, whether at the ballpark, at home, on the radio, or poolside in Arroyo Seco. He also cheered on the San Francisco 49ers and Golden State Warriors, in good years and bad. He faithfully texted family and friends before every game, with a celebratory "HUMMBABY" text at the ready for any wins.
Nate loved organizing the annual Reno bus trip over the last 23 years. He lived for the rowdy party on the bus, followed by hours at the craps tables where he and his friends would cheer on one another with the hopes of someone winning big.
Above all, Nate loved his family. Welcoming two children with Robin and three step-children with Cindy, he was blessed with 15 grandchildren who brought him endless joy. He loved supporting them from the sidelines of their sporting events, or from the audience at their performances. They will always remember going with him to check his cattle and the turtles at the Turtle Pond, and stopping for donuts at the Donut King.
Spending time with his family and friends was where Nate was truly his happiest.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Marie and Miles Holaday, his brother, Louis Holaday and his most faithful companion, Boomer.
He is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Cindy, his children Shelley Holaday-Lebow (Mike) and Brian Holaday (Kate) and stepdaughters Alison Labra (Ariel), Melissa James (Jeremy), and Liz Annis (Josh); his beloved grandchildren Lacey and Jordan Moss, Tyler Engleman, Isabel and Sofia Labra, Cameron and Riley LeBow, Brok, Pistol, and Buster James, Miles, Mason, and Matthew Holaday, Marcus and Lillah Jane Annis, his brothers, Mark (Karen) and John (Bonnie), and sister Julie Given (Joe) and numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate it if you would make a donation in honor of Nate to any of the following organizations that he loved and supported: The Salinas Valley Fair Heritage Foundation, Hartnell College Foundation, Mission San Antonio, Palma Athletics, King City Young Farmers or the Knights of Columbus or the King City Mustang Bench.
Nate was laid to rest on Thursday, March 2, 2023 in the King City District Cemetery.
Family and friends gathered afterwards for a Celebration of Life / Memorial Service in the Orradre Building of the Salinas Valley Fairgrounds in King City.
