Obituary

Mary Joline “Mary Jo” Allred, a longtime resident of Greenfield, passed away surrounded by the love of her family and the many memories she created throughout her remarkable life. Mary Jo was born on January 12, 1927, in Hill Top, Boone County, Arkansas, to Ernest and Ida Edgar. Rooted in faith, family, and hard work, she carried the values of her Arkansas upbringing with her throughout her life.

Mary Jo graduated from the School of the Ozarks and always treasured the friendships and memories she made there, attending many alumni reunions over the years. On September 6, 1947, she married the love of her life, Charles “Charlie” Allred, in Boone County, Arkansas. Together they shared 73 devoted years of marriage before Charlie’s passing in February 2020 — a love story built on commitment, laughter, perseverance, and unwavering devotion to family.

The couple began building their family in Arkansas, welcoming their daughter Carolyn Ann in 1948, their son Charles Lee in 1950, and their daughter Linda Diane in 1951. In 1960, Mary Jo and Charlie moved their family from Arkansas to Greenfield after selling the family farm. Shortly after their move, they welcomed their daughter Angela Jean in 1961. Over the years, Mary Jo and Charlie created countless memories traveling to Reno and Laughlin alongside Charlie’s siblings and their spouses, enjoying life’s simple pleasures and each other’s company.

Mary Jo lived a life centered around faith, family, service, and creativity. She was baptized on July 7, 1968, and faithfully attended the Pentecostal Church of God and was a member of the Women’s Auxiliary in Greenfield for many years. Her hobbies reflected her nurturing spirit and hardworking nature. She loved sewing, crocheting, embroidery, attending TOPS meetings, baking, cooking, canning, gardening, and spending time with those she loved. Many people loved and enjoyed her pies and cobblers. She was known for her warm heart, delicious homemade meals, and the comfort she brought to others through both her words and actions.

Before dedicating herself fully to raising her family, Mary Jo worked at the Berryville Chicken Plant in Arkansas in the late 1950s. She also helped milk cows and make homemade butter on the family farm. After moving to California, she became a member of the Teamsters Union, the Silver Kings and Queens, and the “Pink Ladies,” volunteering her time at the local hospital. Mary Jo later retired from Basic Vegetables at the age of 67 after years of dedicated work.

Mary Jo is survived by her loving children, Charles Lee Allred; Carolyn Ann Ramos; Linda Diane Johnson; and Angela Jean Young and husband George Young. She also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren: Shawn Johnson and wife Amy, Tara Phillips and husband Jeremy, Josh Johnson and wife Holly, Beau Johnson and wife Amy, Cody Young and wife Ashleigh, and Cassie Letterman and husband Jason. Her legacy continues through her great-grandchildren Carson, Brea, Darius, Presley, Payton, Dillon, Kamryn, Kylie, Brixton, Brayden, Bodie, Vivian and Lucy; and her great-great grandchildren, Baylor and Henry. She is also survived by her sister, Ann Bardy; and her nephew Bob Bardy.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Charles Allred; her daughter, Sheri Jo; her parents, Ernest and Ida Edgar; and her brother, Lester Edgar.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Lupe Mendoza and Pinky Alvarado for the compassionate care and kindness they showed Mary Jo.
