Obituary

The family and friends of Kenneth Alfred Digges lost a wonderful man Sunday night as the result of his sudden death.

Kenny was born in Salinas, CA, on August 14, 1960, to Leon Edward Digges (deceased) and Shirley Mae Cavalli. He joined siblings Diana, Richard and Debra in their San Ardo home.

Attending San Ardo Union School, Kenny preferred to spend his time riding motorcycles. He began riding at the age of seven and was soon participating in short-track races across the state. These events were often attended with his second father, Eugene Land, and his brother from another mother, John Land. He continued racing throughout his years at King City High School. On the day he died he had done what he enjoyed best … riding his Harley to see the Super Bike races in Monterey.

After high school, Kenny moved to Morro Bay and attended Cuesta College for a time. Being a free spirit, the classroom could not contain him.

In addition to his love of motorcycles, Kenny enjoyed playing softball in his younger days. With his brother, Richard, they played "C" league softball and won the championship playing for the Navarrete Js in 1982.

Kenny was a man of many talents. He began his career farming with his father, Leon, on the ranch in San Ardo. After his father's retirement, Kenny worked as a bus driver and maintenance worker at San Antonio School for four years. Upon leaving that job, he began a career in carpentry. He worked in construction in various locations before moving to San Diego in 1998. There, he met his first wife, Monet. They moved to Hawaii for a couple years, then to Indiana, where his wife originated. After their divorce, Kenny moved back to California and was able to spend some time with his father prior to his death.

Ever willing to try new things, Kenny went to work for FCI Constructors in 2001. He was a bridge carpenter, building foundations, pile driving, and forming soffets and decks for highway bridges. His work can be seen on Highway 101 in the Bay Area on the bridge near San Jose that has the hibiscus design on it. This was a very dangerous job, requiring working on extreme heights and close to speeding traffic. Kenny earned five safety awards during his tenure there.

In 2005, Kenny moved back to San Ardo to be near his family and contribute to the care of his mother, Shirley. He learned another aspect to his career when he went to work for King City Electric and he added to his knowledge of electrician projects. Ten months later, Kenny left that job and worked another four months of bridge construction with MCM Construction.

A career with the State of California began as a carpenter at the Coalinga State Hospital. To be closer to home, Kenny acquired a position as a maintenance mechanic at Salinas Valley State Prison where he was employed until his death.

Kenny married Julie Echenique Trescony on July 7, 2007. He confessed to having a crush on her since high school. Julie came with an instant family including her son, John Trescony, and daughter, Alexandria Trescony. As with all blended families, things did not always go smoothly, but he dearly loved these children.

Kenny was also a loving uncle to his many nieces and nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews. These include: Kevin and Kim Scharf Wegner (Diana and Bob Scharf); Nathan, Mitchell, and Sarah Wegner (Kim and Brian Wegner); Charles and Christopher Digges (Richard and Sharlotte Digges); Genevieve, Sabastian, Elizabeth, Penelope, Madaline and Nathan Digges (Charlie and Jenifer Digges); and Bel Digges, recently married to Christopher; Matthew and Jeremy Morrow (Debra and Randolph Morrow); Summer, Cloe and Quin (Matt and Brandy Morrow); Zachary, Leona and Joe Lynn (Jeremy Morrow and Natalie Morrow).

He also leaves his much loved mother, Shirley, who turns 89 on July 19.

Kenny wore his heart on his sleeve. You always knew where you stood with him. He was always available to a friend in need. Attention to detail and a decorative eye where hallmarks of Kenny's handiwork. He strived for perfection in all he did. As a Leo, he loved to be the center of attention and his raucous laugh was infectious to all. Kenny's passing will leave a huge void in the lives of those he knew.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances can be made to the Cancer Treatment Centers of America, or the cancer treatment organization of your choice.
