IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Jose Maria
Medina Maruffo (Chema)
October 7, 1952 – February 17, 2024
Jose Maria Medina Maruffo (Chema) passed away early afternoon February 17, 2024 surrounded by his family in San Jose, California. He is preceded in death by his father, Alfonso Medina Garcia.
It is with heavy hearts that we gather to honor the cherished soul of Jose Maria Medina Marrufo, at the age of 71, who resided in both San Jose, California and Durango, Mexico. Born on October 7, 1952 in Santiago Papasquiaro, Durango State, Mexico, he graduated in accounting from La Sociedad de Estudiantes de la Escuela Secundaria y Normal in Durango, Mexico.
Upon coming to the United States, he worked in agriculture alongside his father, Alfonso Medina Garcia, and his older brother Alfonso Medina Marrufo. He later became involved in the United Farm Workers Union in King City, serving on the board as a delegator during the Cesar Chavez movement. Afterwards, he married and moved to San Jose with his wife and two children. He attended a trade school in San Jose which allowed him to excel as a brake operator in sheet metal Saucedo until its closure. He later dedicated himself to working at Evergreen School District where he later retired after 10 years in 2019.
Chema's passions included visiting his mother in Durango, Mexico, reading, listening to music, dancing, building smokers from 55-gallon barrels, and baseball, a sport he was dedicated to for over 49 years. He transitioned from playing to managing a team called Chema's Yankees, which achieved numerous championships throughout the mid-'90s with his son and grandson by his side. He was known for his perfectly barbecued quarter chicken thigh, which he learned and mastered from the late Guadalupe Soliz, Sr. He thoroughly enjoyed watching his grandchildren engage in sports and other activities.
Chema was united in marriage to Anna Maria De Leon for five decades, and together they raised their children, Jose Maria Medina, Jr. and Griselda Medina-Ickert. His legacy extends to his beloved grandchildren, Jose Maria Medina III, Aliyah Cheyenne Medina, Azalea Anne Medina, Matthew and Salma Ickert.
In remembrance, he leaves his 99-year-old mother, Alicia Marrufo Carrasco de Medina and siblings, Alfonso Medina Marrufo, Saul Medina Marrufo, Nahun Efren Medina Marrufo, Abigayl Medina Marrufo de Martínez and Dalia Medina Marrufo de Arrieta
