IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Ida Madalena
Pura
January 18, 1932 – August 7, 2023
"YOU ARE MY SUNSHINE, MY ONLY SUNSHINE" Ida Madalena Pura, the beloved matriarch of the Pura family from Greenfield, passed away peacefully August 7th, 2023 with her husband of 70 years, Wimpy, by her side.
Born on January 18, 1932, Ida was the spunky, vivacious, middle daughter of Dan and Cesira Rubbo, who had recently immigrated to Gonzales from their small village in Northern Italy with Ida's older sister Lucy. Younger sister Ines rounded out the Rubbo family. Ida graduated from Gonzales High. Shortly after, she met Wimp, a tall handsome Swiss boy from Greenfield. They married in 1953 and for over 70 years built a beautiful life on the beloved home ranch. It was here that she raised her four children, grew her gorgeous roses, cooked and celebrated with friends and family, and hosted relatives from Switzerland and Italy. She filled her home with love and music and treasures from her many travels around the world. She went back to the old country numerous times but also to far off places like Bali and China to Spain where she added to her extensive Lladro collection. Ida was a talented painter and her paintings grace the walls of more than just her own home. She made beautiful stepping stones that she gave as gifts or donations and that welcome visitors to her home on the ranch along with her roses and wind chimes and beautiful quail figurines which were also a favorite of hers. She was a member of The Birthday Club, a group of women who decorated, cooked, and celebrated each other's birthdays monthly. Ida usually did all the flower arrangements. When her children were young, summers were spent up at Millers Lodge with other local families and when the family bought their cabin in Sycamore Flats, Ida started the tradition of Easter at the Cabin! Generations of Puras from all sides of the family have spent every Easter at the cabin hunting Easter eggs, batting the piñata, cheering on the duck race and battling it out in the egg toss, all with Ida laughing and cooking and loving on everyone. She was active in Silver Kings and Queens, she won Mother of The Year in Greenfield one Mother's Day complete with ceremony and plaque and write up in the paper. Ida loved the annual Swiss Picnic and always seemed to get the best table right under the old oak tree. She also loved Mother's Day at the Swiss Rifle Club accompanied by her ever growing family. Ida loved life and she loved her family. She was truly the matriarch of this clan. She was tough and she was kind and she said the word and we all happily gathered at the home ranch for polenta and stew and stories, and of course a game or two of Pedro or bridge. She was a card player for life going back to Gonzales often to take on the boys from her hometown. She was ready for a game anytime and played well into the evenings all summer at the cabin, and regularly on Sundays with dinner and cards being a tradition at the home ranch. Her gifts of humor and hard work live on in her children and grandchildren, but also her love of Pedro. Her grandkids especially are a skilled group! The little things gave Ida joy, seeing her children thrive and marry and watching her grandchildren grow up and have lives and children of their own. She was proud of her family, proud of her heritage, and we were all so proud of her, so proud to belong to her, to be a part of the joy and the love and the life that she built. She lived an epic, beautiful life, and she lives on in each one of us who had the honor of calling her mom, or grandma or great grandmother or friend. That would be enough for her…oh and maybe a quick rendition of "You Are My Sunshine."
Ida is survived by her husband and true love of over 70 years, Wimpy, her sister Lucy Solomon, and her four beloved children, Janice Banta (Russ), Stan Pura (Jamii), Laurie Pura, Marc Pura (Tara), eleven grandkids, and nine great-grandkids.
Our family wants to acknowledge three precious angels who came into our lives and gave Momma the care she needed while becoming dear and beloved friends to us all. Thank you Nau, Sela, and Josefina. Also, thank you to Dr. Kubica and staff, as well as Hospice of the Central Coast that provided such excellent care. In honor of Momma, memorials and donations can be made to an organization of your choice or Hospice of the Central Coast: 2 Upper Ragsdale Dr., Unit D120, Monterey, CA 93940.
A Rosary and Funeral Mass, together, will be held on Tuesday, August 29th at 10:00am at the Greenfield Holy Trinity Church. Burial will be at the Holy Trinity Cemetery. A Celebration will follow at the Greenfield Memorial Hall with singing, storytelling, and cards on the table for Pedro! Rest in peace beloved Ida. Until we meet again…"Que Sera Sera"
