IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Ida Margaret
(Peggy) Mcginty Barbree Casey
March 15, 1936 – December 11, 2021
Ida Margaret (Peggy) McGinty Barbree Casey was born March 15, 1936 in Winnemucca, Nevada to the late Walter (Mac) and Hilma McGinty. She was preceded in death by both her parents; sister, Shirley; son, Walter Barbree; husband, Harry Casey; daughter, Kelly Barbree Dayton Melancon; son in law, David Clark and oldest grandson, Tim Dayton. She is survived by Michael (Sarah Nash) Barbree with May and Jimmy; Kelly's remaining children, Cassy (Chimmy) Lee with Mo; Jake (Chelsea) Dayton with Kylee, Kelly Anne and Emmalee Dayton and Alexi, Jayden and Macie Collins; Laurie (Tim) Bulkley with Amy Ramirez with Angelika Powell and Jason (Cortnee) Ramirez with Marissa and JD; Shannon (Tim) Seifert with Katie and Rae; Kathleen Clark with Craig and Patrick (Ilene) Barbree with Tom and Ben. She also had 4 stepchildren, Sharon (George Littleton) Casey, Patty (Mike) Griffin, Rich (Sharon) Casey, and Bill (Holly) Casey as well as numerous step grandchildren and their children, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Peggy traveled a lot and loved to plan the trips just as much as going on them. She was a big fan of Cal football and baseball as well as the Giants and Forty-niners. She also sat through a lot of games played by children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was in a quilting group and book groups. Peggy also loved going once a month to retreat weekends in San Juan Bautista and participated in a multitude of activities at St. John's Church including hosting bible studies and counting donations. In late 1986 she and a friend, Teddie Carney, started "Loaves and Fishes" – a nonprofit specifically focused on feeding migrant workers and other people in the community who didn't qualify for government assistance. Initially Peggy and Teddie bought all the food they donated, but over time they made connections to get more food to help more people. It is still going strong 35 years later.
She took her 6 children, 2 daughter in laws, and one grandson on an Alaskan cruise when she was 71, where she zip-lined for the first time. Peggy also invited all of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren to go zip-lining outside of Santa Cruz to celebrate her 80 th birthday. 37 of them joined her for the weekend and yes, she zip-lined in the redwoods at 80.
We want to thank Michael Barbree for doing so much for Peggy – all the appointments, all the emergency room visits, all the accommodating he has done since she started falling 5 years ago, well before breaking her first hip. Michael, along with his wife Sarah Nash, consistently showed up when Peggy needed something, over and over and the family was so lucky he was willing to step up in such a big way. Rich Casey and Holly Casey were also frequent providers of assistance. Then there were Peggy's three favorite caregivers: Cynnie O'Connor and home health aides, Kelly and Destiny, who were unfailing in their kindness towards her. There are many others who helped in big and small ways and we appreciate that it took a village. Thanks to all of you!
A funeral mass will be held at St. John's Catholic Church on Wednesday, December 29, 2021 at 1pm. At Peggy's request there will be neither a Rosary nor Visitation and Peggy's family will have a private dissemination of her ashes at a later date.
