Obituary

Hilda Reitzel passed away December 13, 2015 at her home in King City. Born in Toledo, Ohio on January 2, 1925, she was 90 years old.

Hilda is remembered for her decades of service at Mee Memorial Hospital in King City, CA, as a mother of 5 children, as a partner in life and business with her husband Bob, and a lifetime of humanitarianism.

Coming of age at the end of the Great Depression, Hilda could not afford her dream to be a doctor like her maternal grandfather. Instead she graduated Nursing School in 1945 at the end of World War II. Not yet 21, she was ineligible to pursue her secondary desire to become a military nurse when the war ended. She met Robert Paul Reitzel of Luckey, Ohio and they married August 8, 1945 in Portsmouth, Virginia.

Hilda and Bob moved to Greenfield, CA in December 1946. She spent her life in Greenfield raising 5 children and working as a registered nurse at Mee Memorial Hospital in King City for 35 years (1961-1996). She co-owned an appliance and refrigeration contracting business with her husband in Greenfield for 40 years until Bob died in December 1988.

Hilda performed in a music program each Monday for 20 years at Eden Valley Care Center in Soledad, served for 8 years on the Emergency Medical Care Committee, provided rides to medical appointments around the area for anyone in need, was a member of Silver Kings and Queens where she loved visiting with friends and taking trips, and was a member of the Greenfield Methodist Church and a life-time member of the American Legion Auxiliary, holding offices in both.

Hilda traveled extensively in retirement to Mexico, Russia, Germany, Thailand, Australia/New Zealand, Spain/Portugal, and cruise trip tours of Alaska and Northern Europe. She was also an avid Bay Area sports fan, closely following the SF Giants, the 49ers, and the Golden State Warriors. Hilda would like to be remembered this way: "She loved God, Family, and all outdoor sports."

Hilda is survived by 5 children: John/Annette Reitzel (Fair Oaks, CA), Rebecca/Robert Trescott (King City, CA), Barbara/Robert Chavez (Susanville, CA), Thomas Reitzel (Oklahoma City, OK), Ken/Becky Reitzel (Culver City, CA); 4 grandchildren: Cyndee/Rye Bogard, Teresa/Jason Langslet, Sydney Reitzel, Cameron Reitzel; 4 great-grandchildren: Devon Surian, Brayden Langslet, Charlotte Bogard, Sophia Bogard, and many other relatives in California, Ohio, and Germany.

Hilda follows in death her husband: Robert Reitzel (1988); father: Herbert Solomon (1974); mother: Winona Solomon (1997); and brothers: James Solomon (2007) and Glenn ("Bud") Solomon (2003).

There will be a celebration of Hilda's life at Eddington Funeral Services, 333 East San Antonio Drive, King City, CA, on December 29 from 1-5PM. Interment will be at the Garden of Memories in Salinas, CA at a later date.
