Herlinda "Helen" La Fuente Lopez, 89 of King City passed away, Thursday, July 10, 2014 at her home with her family by her side. Helen was born in Austin, Texas, December 19, 1924.
Helen married Louis Lopez and together they moved their family to California in 1961. They owned and operated the Star Café in Greenfield for several years.
In 1963 they purchased the City Café restaurant. The restaurant was located on the 300 block of Broadway. US Highway 101 once ran down Broadway. The restaurant was not only a local favorite of the town's people, but often a planned stop by many travelers as they came thru King City. You had to get there early if you wanted lunch and many times there were waiting lines of people to get a meal. Mr. Lopez passed away in 1981. Helen continued to operate the restaurant with her children. She loved to be at the restaurant working it was where she felt comfortable and at home. She loved to cook and enjoyed providing a meal for all who came. Helen eventually turned the restaurant over to the children who operated it until it's closing in 2007. While the restaurant boasted many fine Mexican dishes, none were more famous than their Chile Verde. It had its own unique flavor, unmatched by any others. The community has long since missed the City Café and the Lopez family's home cooking.
When Helen wasn't at the restaurant and in her retirement, she loved and cherished the time she spent with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. When she could she enjoyed shopping.
Helen is survived by her children, Virginia Lopez, Margaret Lopez, Louis Lopez, Bertha Younnel, Lisa Rangel and Julie Lopez; sixteen grandchildren and thirty-seven great grandchildren.
