Obituary

Francis (Frank "Mickey") Joseph Hearne was born on July 7th 1942, in King City, CA to Irene and Larry A. Hearne. After courageously battling cancer for nearly 5 years, he peacefully passed away with his family by his side, on September 12, 2013.

Mickey lived in Southern Monterey County all his life. While growing up, Mickey enjoyed participating in 4H and raising animals for the Salinas Valley Fair. He played football and pole vaulted for King City High School and went on to pole vault for Hartnell Junior College in Salinas. He graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in 1964 with a degree in Agriculture Business Management. While at Cal Poly, he was a member of the Alfa Zeta National Agriculture Scholastic Achievement Fraternity. From 1963 until his retirement in 2008, he was an integral part of the family business, L.A. Hearne Company, headquartered in King City. During that time he worked in various roles from Ag Field Man to Company President. Throughout his career he made many lifelong friends who worked in the agricultural industry.

Mickey had many passions, he loved to travel and always enjoyed life to the fullest. In his younger years, he enjoyed SCUBA diving, photography, flying his Aeronca airplane and raising cattle and other livestock on the Harless Ranch. Throughout his life he was an avid sports fan and greatly enjoyed going up with friends and family to watch the 49ers, Oakland A's, and San Francisco Giants. Mickey loved running, completing more than 25 marathons throughout the U.S., Italy, Ireland and Canada, along with several sprint triathlons. He also enjoyed gardening, building projects and riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

Mickey was very involved in his community. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, a Volunteer Coach, a 40-year-plus Member and Past President of the King City Lions Club, a Member and Past President of the Salinas Valley Fair Board and a founding Executive Board Member of the Monterey County Agriculture and Rural Life Museum. He served on boards for the California Feed and Grain Association and Mee Memorial Hospital. He was especially proud to be involved in the formation of the Southern Monterey County Fire Protection District, where he was a Volunteer, first Fire Chief and District Board of Directors President.

Mickey is survived by Patty, his wife of more than 50 years; his children Irene Bray, Barbara Hearne (Bret Bonfantini), Steve Hearne and Tom Hearne; son-in-law Barney Bray; daughters-in-law, Katrina Hearne and Katie Hearne; grandchildren Kelly Bray, Wil Bray, Casey Bray, Dustin Hearne, Jacob Hearne, Mackenzie Hearne, Brooks Hearne, and Samuel Hearne; sister Pat Guidici Arena, and brothers Dennis Hearne and Tim Hearne. He was preceded in death by his parents and by his brother Larry F. Hearne.

Thank you to all of the doctors and staff that provided such excellent care to Mickey over the past 5 years, especially Dr. Roy Schindelheim of Mee Memorial Hospital in King City, Dr. John Hausdorff of Pacific Cancer Care in Monterey and Dr. Brendan Visser, of Stanford Hospital.

Mickey's giant personality and contagious laugh will be greatly missed by his family and countless friends, but the memories he left with us will live in our hearts forever.

In lieu of flowers, Mickey requested donations be made to San Antonio Mission, The American Cancer Society or a gift of your time towards some type of community service or volunteering at Mee Memorial Hospital.
