Floyd, age 89, passed peacefully Friday, May 24, 2013 at home on his family ranch.

A ROSARY and MASS will be celebrated, 10:30 a.m., Saturday, June 1, 2013 at Our Lady of Ransom Catholic Church in San Ardo.

GRAVESIDE SERVICES with military honors will follow at San Ardo District Cemetery.

Floyd was born October 27, 1923 in Broken Bow, Oklahoma to Carra Belle and Fred William Grigory. The Grigory family farm provided a childhood of hunting and fishing with Floyd's siblings: Martin, Mildred, Eugene, Leslie, Ann, Verna, Betty, and Bill. Floyd's primary and secondary education was nine miles away in Broken Bow.

During high school and his military service, he enjoyed boxing but hunting was his favorite sport, and became a passion that he would pass on to his grandchildren years later. After graduating high school, he joined the Army Air Force and began training as a pilot until the Japanese surrender of 1945; his service continued until the following year. Floyd went on to attended Oregon State University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Fish and Game Management. It was while working for the California Department of Fish and Game when Denise Orradre zoomed by Floyd in her red car. They were married 61 years ago at San Miguel Mission.

Together, Floyd and Denise owned and operated the family cattle ranch in San Ardo, CA where they raised their three daughters Odette, Yvette and Annette. As the girls attended primary school, Floyd served as the president of the San Ardo School Board and remained on the Board for 14 years. Additional roles at the local level include serving as president of the San Ardo Lion's Club and sitting on the Monterey County Planning Commission and numerous boards. Floyd also served on the California Fish and Game Advisory Committee. In 1971 Governor Ronald Reagan appointed him to the California Water Quality Control Board, he was subsequently reappointed by Governor Edmund Brown, Jr. in 1976 and served over 12 years. Additional appointments included the United States Department of Agriculture's Secretary's Advisory Committee and the Bureau of Land Management Grazing Advisory Board, but without a doubt, Floyd's fondest cause was preserving agriculture land and advancing the beef industry. He joined the county, state and National Cattlemen's associations, eventually serving as County President and State Vice President. In 1984, the Monterey County Cattlemen honored Floyd with the Cattleman of the Year award. Floyd lent his time and expertise generously, and has left a lasting impact on his community. Even so, he regarded public service as a duty and was most satisfied being a cattle rancher.

His strong work ethic was only matched by his commitment to his ranch and his deep love and knowledge of wildlife. Floyd was one of the last of the ranchers who could do it all, a true cowman who helped shape the cattle industry in Monterey County. Most of all, Floyd will be forever loved and remembered as a devoted Husband, Father and Grandfather. Survivors include Floyd's wife Denise Grigory and their three daughters Odette, Yvette and Annette. Odette's children Cyrus, Nolan and Katrina of San Ardo, CA; Yvette's husband Dr. Bill Stevenson and their children Whitney, Morgan and Tyler of Buellton, CA; and Annette's husband Jan and their sons Jace and Travis of San Ardo. Floyd's is also remembered by his two surviving sisters, Ann Ashby of Ventura, CA and Betty Tarr of Las Crucas, New Mexico. Floyd is preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, three sisters and grandchild Henry Grigory Martinus.
