Fernande C. Hardoy passed away November 16, 2013 at Community Hospital in Monterey.
Fernande was born August 20, 1930 in Aldudes in the Basque region of France to Michel and PascalineSorhondo. She immigrated to the United States in 1951 as a nanny for her uncle's family in Los Banos California. She then worked at various Basque hotels in the Central Valley and eventually worked as a nanny again in Woodside, California. There she met Laurent Hardoy, and they married in 1961. They settled in Sonoma, California where they had a son, Michel in 1965. They relocated to Redwood City where they lived for the next thirty eight years. During this time, Fernande started a long career as a daycare provider.
In 1993, Fernande and Laurent moved to King City to be closer to their son and his family. She again established a daycare business, retiring only three years ago at the age of eighty. Along with her family, she loved all the children she cared for. She became known as Amatxi(grandma) to many.
Amatxi was little but mighty. You could hear her laugh across a crowded room. Just turn on the Basque music, and she would break out singing and dancing. From the love and care she gave to the children, to the amazing food she made, she touched so many lives.
She is survived by her husband, Laurent of King City, her son, Michel(Denise) of Lockwood, her grandson Matthew of Paso Robles, and granddaughter Nicole of Chico. She is also survived by two brothers and three sisters in the Basque country, and numerous nieces and nephews in the United States and France.
Services will be held Friday, November 22nd. Rosary begins at 9:30 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. at St John's Catholic Church in King City, California.
In Lieu of flowers, the family prefers donations to her favorite charity, The Hanna Boys Center in Sonoma, California, or your preferred charity.
