Long time King City resident Dr. Duane Franklin Hyde passed away peacefully in his sleep on May 24 th , 2022 from heart failure in his Assisted Living home in Seattle, WA. He was lovingly surrounded by family and friends and was 98 years old.
A Memorial Service to celebrate his amazing life will be held on October 5 th at 11:00A at the Grace Lutheran Church, 205 Canal St, King City, CA.
Duane was born October 3, 1923 in Almont, ND and was the last of six children. He grew up working on the family farm and herded cattle daily. He went onto attend Jamestown College and left after two years to proudly serve in the army during WWII where he was awarded a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He returned to Jamestown College in pre-med and received his MD degree from the University of Chicago and completed his residency at Cook County Hospital.
Duane accepted a position in King City as a Family Practitioner and delivered around 1,500 babies over his 37-year career. He was well loved by his community and lived across the street from the hospital. He had a large family practice and considered his patients his friends, many expected a hug at the end of their visit. During his time off he built two cabins on the Big Sur coast overlooking the Pacific Ocean. He maintained them into his 90's.
Duane lived in King City for almost 60 years and in his early nineties he moved to Seattle to be close to his daughter Diane and family. He had many adventures in his nineties including traveling to the 70 th Infantry Division reunions held throughout the US. In 2019 he traveled to the French Consulate in San Francisco where he received the "Legion of Honor" medal from the French Government for his service in France during WWII. Most recently, in November of 2021 he was inducted into the "Wall of Heroes" at the Seattle Veterans Administration "For extraordinary heroism, bravery, selflessness, dedication, and devotion to duty…" He was truly the finest example of the "Greatest Generation" and will be sadly missed by so many.
Duane is survived by his daughter Diane Rohrbach and family, his son Douglas Hyde and family and step-daughters, Vivienne Teets, Bonnie Perelli, Dianna Chapman, Shelly Martinez and their families. He will be remembered lovingly with respect and honor for a life well lived.
Dr. Hyde gave to many charities and in lieu of flowers please give to your favorite charity in his memory.
