Obituary

Betty Sales Guess, formerly of Soledad, California, and most recently of Paso Robles, passed away on October 16, 2026, following a courageous battle with breast cancer. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and valued member of her community.

Born on November 2, 1936, to Theodore and Helen Sales, Betty attended King City and Gonzales High Schools, graduating with the Class of 1954.

Throughout her life, Betty was dedicated to her community and to helping others. She served as a 4-H and Girl Scout leader, was a director of the Monterey County Cattle Women, and was a member of the Hartnell Board and the Small Bean Advisory Council. In addition to her community involvement, Betty was a successful businesswoman who owned and operated an H&R Block office.

Betty loved cooking and entertaining, and enjoyed bringing family and friends together. She was also a competitive card player. Sharing good food, playing cards, and spending time with loved ones were among the ways she connected with others. The memories made around her table and in her company will be treasured by those who knew and loved her.

Betty was preceded in death by her beloved husband, William “Shorty” Guess, and her great-granddaughter, Sophia Julianne Rubbo.

She is survived by her sister, Shirley Johansen (James), of Oroville; her daughters, Julia Rubbo (Terry), of Soledad, and Michelle Winter (Andrew), of Rocklin; and her grandchildren, Crystal Rubbo, Dustin Rubbo (Valerie), Taylor Cameron (Chris), Ryan Winter (DeAnna), and Claire Winter. She also leaves behind four great-grandchildren: Giavonna, Ella and Ava Rubbo, and Miles Cameron.

Betty will be remembered for her devotion to family, her commitment to her community, and the joy she found in bringing people together. Her love, generosity, and the memories she created will live on through the generations of family she leaves behind and all those whose lives she touched.

At Betty’s request, no services will be held. Her family and all who knew her are invited to remember her in their own way and cherish the memories they shared.

Betty will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered always.
