Obituary

Betty (Hood) Culver, 94, passed peacefully September 5, 2021 in Salinas, CA.

Betty was born March 3rd 1927 in Hanford, CA to Ed and Lucinda Houx. She is survived by her daughter Julia Silveira and her many nieces and nephews.

Betty's four years of high school were the four years of World War II, graduating 1945. Betty was greatly impacted by the fact that so many of the brave young men she went to King City High School with and knew so well, left King City to travel great lengths at even greater peril to protect & defend our country. Many of the girls she went to high school with she maintained lifelong friendships with, often planning class reunions with many of them.

Betty worked for the California Division of Forestry (now known as CalFire) on Division Street in King City. During her 27 years there, it was not unusual for someone hired by her as a seasonal firefighter to stop and thank her for starting their lifelong career in forestry. Betty worked in both Personnel and Finance. Betty made many lifelong friends there and often stated how fulfilling her work there was. For her tireless work on the 1977 Marble Cone Fire, she was awarded the Fire-Person of the Year.

Upon retirement Betty remarried and moved from King City. Betty married her once upon a time KCHS Junior Prom date and relocated to Reno, NV. She enjoyed her life there with husband, Gent. Upon his passing, Betty returned to the Salinas Valley to be near her daughter and son-in-law in Salinas.

Betty enjoyed visiting her family & friends, planning Class Reunions, gardening, reading, most WWII movies and any Clint Eastwood movie, and of course, watching her beloved San Francisco Giants (especially her favorite Buster Posey).

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Ed and Lucinda "Lucy" Houx; husband Gent Culver; husband Ed "Robin" Hood; Brothers Bob (Pat) Houx; Cecil (Alice) Houx; Raymond (June) Houx; Sisters LaVerne Harness and Pauline (Bob) Hall; and son-in-law John T. Silveira.

Betty would not want you to be saddened by her passing, but to celebrate her long life well lived.

Donations may be made in her honor to Hartnell College Foundation/John Silveira Health & Peace Nursing Scholarship or to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

A celebration of life will be announced at a later time.
